This past weekend, the grounds at our site in the Namayingo District buzzed with a specific kind of energy—the energy of readiness. At Mercy of God Mission (MGM), we know that true community empowerment doesn’t come from just handing out resources; it comes from equipping people with the tools to build their own economic independence. When we announced the interviews for our new Artisan Bakehouse vocational program, we knew there was a need. But seeing the community’s response firsthand was profoundly moving.
Thirty-Two Visions for the Future
Throughout the day, 32 incredible candidates sat down with our team. These were not just brief conversations. We listened to their goals, their drive, and their deep desire to uplift their families. We heard stories of resilience and a shared eagerness to master a new craft. Capturing these baseline stories reminded us exactly why we secured this 4-acre hub in the first place: the human potential here is limitless, it just needs an outlet.
The First Cohort
Making the final selection was incredibly difficult given the high caliber of the candidates. Today, we are thrilled to officially introduce our inaugural cohort of 12 dedicated adults!
This group isn’t just going to learn how to bake standard bread. They are stepping into a forward-thinking program. As they master commercial baking, they will also be exploring sustainable, plant-based culinary concepts—creating nourishing, high-quality foods that honor local agricultural roots while pushing the boundaries of what a community bakehouse can offer. The human foundation for this project is officially set.

With our 12 future bakers ready to begin, our immediate focus shifts to outfitting the Artisan Bakehouse. To maximize our impact and ensure long-term operational resilience, MGM is committed to sourcing our commercial ovens, industrial mixers, and prep stations locally within East Africa. We are buying local to build local.
